Design Achievement – A dramatic transformation of the 1950s era Oak Ridge High School has restored this community icon. Oak Ridge High School is a tangible symbol of this research-centered community's emphasis on culture and academic achievement. DLR Group's design met the challenge of integrating 21st Century technologies and teaching approaches within an older, double loaded corridor environment. The curriculum reflects the highest emphasis on science instruction, designed with input from experts at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Students participate in one of five career academies: Engineering & Manufacturing; Health Sciences; Early Childhood Education; Arts & Communications; and Business & Information Technology. A 3-story classroom wing wraps around the academies and is organized around a state-of-the-art media center. The layout promotes interdisciplinary learning between english, math, science, and social studies.

Scope Summary – The scope for the modernization of Oak Ridge High School included an addition of 166,400 SF on the existing site and 180,000 SF of renovations. The project included a new main gymnasium and enhancements to the auditorium for community use. These two spaces are now connected by a glass-enclosed, multi-level student dining commons that also serves as support space for events. Extensive exterior glass provides abundant daylight to more than 85 percent of core learning spaces and connects students to the outdoors. The building is designed to perform 36 percent more efficiently than the ASHRAE-90.1-1999 baseline by utilizing a hybrid geothermal mechanical system and a water-source heat pump system. DLR Group provided integrated planning, architecture, engineering, and interior services in partnership with ACHW.
